Since we started this petition, we’ve been approached by a number of people offering money for the cause. We’re in the process of setting up a not-for-profit association to manage these donations. In order to show the HRM council and staff that we’re serious about this, we’ve setup a PayPal account and will be accepting donations to be held in trust to help save the oval. You can pay with your PayPal account or any major credit card. Thank you.

If you have any questions about your donation, please contact John Gillis at johnmgillis@hotmail.com or (902) 488-5445.

In the event that this project does not go forward, all donations will be refunded immediately.

I just made my donation. Will there be progress reports on how donations are going? Obviously, not everyone can donate and this is a voluntary campaign, but a significant number of donations will send a strong message to HRM and Council.

      Hi Denise,

Thank you so much for your donation. Yes, I’ll be posting updates on the progress of the donations. At present, we’ve received over $1,100 in donations!

How in god’s name will donating anything send a message to council ???

    • John Gillis says:

Thank you george for your interest. As with previous projects like the skate park, community partnerships both in terms of fundraising and/or operations are valuable in moving projects forward by showing a commitment to making the project a reality and sustaining it. Helping this project is voluntary of course and no one is forced to give and/or participate. I hope you are interested in helping but if not all the best.

I have lived in a private house overlooking the Commons for approaching 30 years and have always told friends and relatives that everyone from the Pope to Paul McCartney has visited me in my front yard. It has been one of the many delights of a location adjacent the Commons. The ice-skating oval and the activity that it has generated in recent weeks has been wonderful; it is such a pleasure watching young and old, experienced and less experienecd, skaters participate and enjoy the space. I will continue to support such ventures as a means of broadening the appeal of an important historic open space in downtown Halifax and hope that it is an activity that will be available in future years.

Ann, I was recently just driving by The Oval and got such pleasure out of seeing the crowd, even though I wasn’t part of it. I was on my way to the hospital to visit a very ill family member, and it buoyed me for my visit. I have only been skating a couple of times, but I feel The Oval is making Halifax a better place to be, whether you skate there or not.

How can anyone be opposed to fresh air, burning calories, bonding with friends or family, promoting a healthy lifestyle emotionaly and physicaly, boosting the Quinpool Road business economy, generating tax revenue. Emagine the downside, freeing up clogged arteries, lowering tryglicerides, weight reduction resulting in long term relief of our medical costs, kids coming out of isolation with gaming controls in hand, young unactive smokers realizing they have no lung capacity.

Politicians bring out the zambonie and clean up your financial waste, the oval needs a hero!

  6. Ian Millar says:

This is a fantastic opportunity to bring recognition to the sport. The bets part for me though is I will be able to now plan trips to Halifax (from Toronto) to train here regularly!
Thanks Halifax for creating this opportunity to have another permanent oval out East! If only we could get it rolling here in Toronto as well…

We MUST not let the naysayers of this city win this one… imagine the negative press across the country. Too many backwards thinking people cant’ get their heads around the fact that 60% of our population is obese! Some scientists now believe that we are so fat as a society, that evolution has actually been reversed and our kids will not live as long as their parents.

  8. Susan Barnes says:

This is the best thing that’s happened to Halifax in the 26 years that I have lived here. I hadn’t skated since my kids were little, I’ve now been out 11 times & loving it! Seeing so many people young & old out enjoying the Oval is amazing. I live near the Commons & it is such a pleasure to see people enjoying a winter activity at the Commons that would normally be empty until Spring. If this area is meant for the use of the people then why not be able to utilize it year round.
